Manatee County’s vision is to establish a more consistent cross section with two lanes in each direction, roundabouts at intersections where feasible, and continuous facilities for pedestrians and bicyclists. In support of this vision, we evaluated alternative design concepts that help moderate vehicle speeds while safely accommodating all modes of travel. The proposed improvements aimed to enhance the character of the community through an appealing streetscape that prioritizes safety while maintaining roadway functionality.
Our team led the corridor study to help bring the County’s vision to life. The process began with a comprehensive assessment of existing conditions, including surrounding land uses and planned developments, traffic operations, bicycle and pedestrian comfort, and crash history. This data served as the foundation for developing three design concept alternatives that address the corridor’s needs and overall study objectives.
To support the evaluation of these alternatives, the team developed a custom GIS application that allows for side-by-side visual comparisons of proposed improvements and right-of-way needs. An evaluation matrix provides an additional framework for comparing each concept based on factors such as operational performance, right-of-way impacts, and planning-level cost estimates. Together, these tools help inform decision-making and guide project implementation.
PGA is also leading stakeholder engagement to support the selection and refinement of a preferred concept. Ultimately, the study will establish a phased implementation plan that provides a clear path for advancing the preferred improvements into design.
