School Avenue Greenway Extension Feasibility Study

This project analyzed the feasibility of a proposed extension to a Multi Use Recreational Trail, also known as a greenway. The proposed extension, from Webber St north to Datura St, provides a low-stress route parallel to US 41, a high-volume and high-crash arterial, diverting vulnerable users from US 41 and providing an alternative to residents making local trips by bicycle, walking, or rolling. Nearby destinations include the Westfield Mall, Arlington Park, and Sarasota High School. The study included extensive stakeholder engagement: two rounds of public meetings, a Visual Preference Survey, concept design visualizations, and opportunities to engage online. The multidisciplinary approach included drainage analysis, structural designs, and performance measures that reflect the communities’ priorities: safety, the natural environment, and stormwater concerns.
